About Our Organization
TeamMates is an organization founded by Dr. Tom and Nancy Osborne in 1991 with chapters forming throughout Nebraska. TeamMates matches caring adults with youth in grades 3 - 12 from the Beatrice Public Schools. The mentor/mentee pair spends 20-30 minutes together each week at the child's school throughout the school year or virtually. The read books, play games, do crafts, shoot hoops or just talk. Our mission is to positively impact the world by helping youth reach their full potential.
Teammates of Beatrice is a site in the READ grant. All of our elementary aged mentees with below average or needs improvement designation in reading scores qualify for a tote of books to take home. Our chapter feels this should be a benefit to all of our elementary aged mentees. We are able to purchase totes and provide those to the youth that would otherwise not qualify for the grant with some additional funding. Each tote is approximately $50.
Any additional money raised would be used for providing support to mentees of all ages with crafts, books or other needs.
Teammates Mentoring of Beatrice has been in Beatrice Public Schools and the community for 26 years, however, most people do not know about us. This years Big Give project is hoping to change that by providing Teammates Mentoring program t-shirts and yard signs to all mentors and mentees enrolled and matched. We want to offer t-shirts and yard signs to any new mentors and mentees as they are trained and added to the program throughout this school year.
If we are able to reach our goal we will work with the school and provide t-shirts to staff as well. We are hoping that by offering special days in which the t-shirts can be worn we will generate more interest in becoming a Teammates mentor and mentee. It will be a part of the school instead of a special program for a select few. It will be more seen and accepted in the school and community.
This project will be completed during January 2024 for National Mentoring Month!
Durig Teammates mentoring time, the mentees and mentors often play board games or complete crafts. This helps both the students and adults who may be nervous about what to talk about during their time together. The games and activities also provide opportunities for learning and facilitate discussions.
We would like to purchase new board games and activity supplies for each of the boxes in the participating school buildings. (High School, Middle School, Paddock Elementary and Stoddard Elementary)
Again in 2020, we hope to provide scholarships for graduating Teammates youth from Beatrice Public Schools. The Chapter will provide $100-$500 scholarships for applying students to the college, trade school or for those entering the military (for supplies). We have three potential recipients this year. It is our desire to continue to instill hope in our youth.

TeamMates youth often are heard saying "I will never be able to afford to go to college." This is why the scholarship component is so important. If a youth has been a TeamMate for a minimum of two years and graduates from high school, he or she will receive $250 per semester. This year we have 3 mentees that are seniors. Along with receiving a scholarship from TeamMates of Beatrice, TeamMates mentees have access to TeamMates Central Office Scholarships and our post-secondary institution scholarships. This is often the incentive needed to encourage youth to take that next step.
